ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership.  The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated. 
 
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
 
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024.  The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
 
The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the SAG (Semi-Autogenous Grinding) mills used in ore processing. Specialist (Ore Processing SAG Mill) plays a critical role in ensuring that SAG (Semi-Autogenous Grinding) mill operations meet production targets, quality standards, and safety regulations, while driving continuous improvement in the grinding process, several strategies and practices need to be implemented

The Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise the operation of the Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills, ensuring optimal performance while fostering a collaborative and proactive team environment to drive operational excellence.
  • Monitor and control the grinding process to ensure it aligns with production targets.
  • Regularly assess the efficiency and capacity of SAG mills, adjusting operational parameters when needed.
  • Lead and manage a team of operators and technicians responsible for SAG mill operation and maintenance.
  • Provide training, coaching, and development opportunities to team members to enhance their skills and improve performance.
  • Ensure that all SAG mill operations comply with safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Responsible to conduct regular safety audits, inspections and promote a safety-first culture.
  • Incumbent to identify opportunities for process optimization and cost reduction in the SAG mill operations.
  • Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) for SAG mill operations, such as throughput, recovery rates, and equipment performance.
  • Work closely with the maintenance team to schedule and plan preventive maintenance activities to minimize downtime.

The Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years in ore processing or SAG mill operations within a mining or industrial environment.
  • At least 2 years proven supervisory role and ability to manage teams, delegate tasks, and motivate employees.
  • Previous experience in a similar role within the mining or mineral processing industry.
  • In-depth understanding of SAG mill operations, grinding processes, and ore processing
  • Experience working in remote areas of Africa.

  • The position offers a 2-year contract with a competitive remuneration package on single status with a 7-3 FIFO roster.
