ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership.  The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated. 
 
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
 
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024.  The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The Stacker Specialist is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of stacking equipment at the Port. This role requires expertise in the mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems of stackers, as well as a strong understanding of material handling processes, safety regulations, and port operations. The Stacker Specialist ensures the smooth and continuous stacking of materials, supporting the Port’s shipping operations and production targets.
 
The Key Responsibilities
Stacker Operation:

  • Operate stacking equipment to stockpile materials (e.g., iron ore, minerals) in a safe and efficient manner, following established procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Control the movement of the stacker boom, conveyors, and other components to ensure accurate and efficient material handling.
  • Monitor the stacking process to prevent spills, equipment damage, and other incidents.
  • Utilize control systems and panels to operate the stacker, including hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical components.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

  • Perform routine maintenance on stacker equipment, including inspections, lubrication, and adjustments.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems with the stacker systems.
  • Perform minor repairs and replace worn or damaged parts.
  • Assist maintenance personnel in performing major repairs and overhauls.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures when operating and maintaining the stacker.
  • Conduct pre-shift inspections of the stacker and related equipment.
  • Identify and report any safety hazards or equipment malfunctions.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training programs.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company policies.

 
Material Handling and Stockpile Management:

  • Follow established stacking plans and procedures to ensure efficient material flow and stockpile management.
  • Monitor material flow rates and adjust equipment operations to optimize stacking capacity.
  • Coordinate with other operations personnel to ensure proper material blending and stockpile management.
  • Prevent material segregation and contamination during stacking operations.

Equipment Monitoring and Optimization:

  • Monitor the performance of the stacker system and identify opportunities for optimization.
  • Track stacking rates, cycle times, and other operational parameters.
  • Recommend adjustments to operating procedures or equipment settings to improve efficiency and reduce downtime.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of stacker operations, including material handling rates, delays, and maintenance activities.
  • Complete daily logs and reports as required.
  • Document any equipment malfunctions or incidents.

 
The Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a technical training program or apprenticeship in heavy equipment operation or maintenance.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience operating and maintaining heavy machinery, preferably in a port or material handling environment.

 
The Rewards

  • The position offers a 2-year contract with a competitive remuneration package on single status with a 7-3 FIFO roster.
