The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The SCADA Controls Specialist will oversee instrumentation, electrical, and control systems for Port plant operations. This will include supporting preventive and backshift maintenance teams, inspection and planning, and Operational teams (troubleshooting and resolving unscheduled plant equipment breakdown), on car dumper, stacker, reclaimer and ship loading. This role involves strategic leadership, team management, and the development of maintenance plans that align with Port operational goals. The Controls specialist will play a pivotal role in minimizing downtime and ensuring that port meets its production target.
The Key Responsibilities
- Ensure safety and compliance by overseeing maintenance activities, conducting risk assessments, and enforcing PPE and work permit procedures.
- Maintain execution and planning by developing, executing, and improving electrical, instrumentation, and control system maintenance plans using SAP-ARMP.
- Manage SCADA, PLC, and automation systems, ensuring proper instrument-level infrastructure, connectivity, and performance.
- Support commissioning and projects by actively participating in Project Phase 2 commissioning and overseeing pre-commissioning and handover activities.
- Solve technical problems by diagnosing complex electrical and automation issues, providing technical solutions, and driving continuous improvement.
- Lead and develop teams by mentoring maintenance staff and fostering a culture of safety, efficiency, and technical excellence.
- Coordinate with OEMs and vendors to ensure technical support, software updates, and spare parts availability.
- Oversee predictive and preventive maintenance for high-voltage systems, control systems, and instrumentation to enhance reliability.
- Manage budgets and resources by optimizing maintenance costs while ensuring necessary resources and spare parts are available.
The Requirements
- Hold a diploma or degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or a related field.
- Have at least 15 years of experience in Concentrator equipment maintenance, including crushing, mills, screens, magnetic separators, hydro cyclones, slurry pumps, and thickeners, as well as material handling equipment like conveyor belts, stackers, and stacker-reclaimers.
- Demonstrate experience in skill and knowledge transfer to the national workforce.
- Be proficient in using CMMS to manage workflow processes.
- Fluency in English is required.
- Have expertise in SAP CMMS PM Modules, safety management, and environmental management.
