The Company
ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership.  The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.

ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.

ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024.  The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

Join us at ArcelorMittal Liberia, where your work will contribute to redefining steel for a new generation, driving innovation, and embracing diversity.

The Role
The incumbent will be responsible for optimizing the reliability and performance of critical equipment within the Buchanan Port. This role involves implementing and managing condition monitoring programs, analyzing equipment performance data, and developing predictive maintenance strategies to minimize downtime and maximize operational efficiency. The role reports to the Port Maintenance Manager.

The Key Responsibilities
Condition Monitoring Program Development and Implementation:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive condition monitoring programs for critical port equipment, including rotating equipment (e.g., motors, pumps, gearboxes), static equipment (e.g., pressure vessels, pipelines), electrical systems (e.g., transformers, switchgear), structural components (e.g., cranes, conveyors)
  • Select and implement appropriate condition monitoring techniques, such as: vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, ultrasonic testing, non-destructive testing
  • Establish data collection procedures and ensure accurate and timely data recording.

Data Analysis and Interpretation:

  • Analyze condition monitoring data to identify equipment degradation trends and potential failures.
  • Utilize data analysis software and tools to generate reports and visualizations.
  • Interpret data to prioritize maintenance activities and optimize maintenance schedules.
  • Develop and implement fault diagnosis techniques to identify root causes of equipment failures.

Predictive Maintenance Strategies:

  • Develop and implement predictive maintenance strategies based on condition monitoring data.
  • Optimize maintenance intervals and reduce unnecessary maintenance activities.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams to plan and execute maintenance tasks based on predictive analysis.
  • Track and evaluate the effectiveness of predictive maintenance strategies.

Reliability Improvement Projects:

  • Identify and implement reliability improvement projects to enhance equipment performance and reduce maintenance costs.
  • Conduct failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and root cause analysis (RCA) to identify potential failure points.
  • Implement design changes and modifications to improve equipment reliability.

Safety and Environmental Compliance:

  • Ensure all condition monitoring activities are conducted safely and in compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Promote a strong safety culture within the maintenance team.

Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with maintenance teams, operations personnel, and engineers to ensure effective implementation of condition monitoring programs.
  • Communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with equipment suppliers and service providers.

The Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • 8+ years of experience in a reliability engineering or condition monitoring role within a mining / port environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and structural systems.
  • Proficiency in vibration analysis, thermography, and other condition monitoring techniques.
  • Strong understanding of reliability engineering principles and methodologies.
  • Experience with data analysis software and tools (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB).
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective solutions to improve equipment reliability.

The Rewards

  • The position offers a 2-year contract with a competitive remuneration package on single status with a 7-3 FIFO roster.
  • Full accommodation is provided on-site, including secure facilities and meals.
