ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one of the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The Rail Operational Expert ensures the efficient and safe operation of the railway system. The expert is responsible for developing and controlling key performance indicators (KPIs) for railway operations. This role involves planning, monitoring, and optimizing train movements, resource allocation, and operational procedures to meet productivity and safety standards. The position requires expertise in managing single-track operations with mixed steel and wooden sleepers, having a few stations/crossings. The Rail Operational Expert shall lead on operational incidents investigation and analysis to include the Operator’s handling of trains, and lead on the continuous improvement processes in Rail Operations.
The Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily rail operations, ensuring the timely and efficient movement of iron ore trains.
- Develop and implement operational strategies to maximize hauling efficiency and minimize downtime.
- Monitor track conditions, particularly the mixed steel and wooden sleepers, to anticipate and address operational risks.
- Coordinate with train operators, dispatchers, and maintenance teams to ensure seamless operations.
- Analyze and optimize train schedules, prioritizing safety and productivity.
- Produce updated records of train handling operations to safeguard trains.
- Establish a benchmark operational movement template per track condition to support train handling.
- Track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as train turnaround time, fuel consumption, and tonnage hauled.
- Prepare and present detailed operational reports to senior management.
The Requirements
- Experience: Experience in rail operations, transportation planning, or a similar role. Familiarity with rail operations KPIs capturing procedures is an advantage. Minimum 10 years of work experience.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of railcar and equipment operations, operations planning, and safety regulations.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Railway Operations, Logistics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; a master’s degree is preferred.
