ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The incumbent will be responsible for the responsible for the management of the port operations and upkeep of port facility. This role requires a high level of expertise in maritime operations, strong leadership skills, and the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
The Port Captain will hold overall responsibility for managing port operations and maintaining the integrity of the port facilities. This leadership role demands a high level of maritime expertise, decision-making ability, and the capacity to lead in high-pressure situations. The Port Captain will ensure that all operational activities within the port are carried out efficiently, safely, and in compliance with relevant regulations.
The Key Responsibilities
· Responsible to oversee the day-to-day operations of the port, ensuring smooth coordination between vessels, terminal operations, and other stakeholders.
· Ensure all port activities are conducted in full compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
· Lead a team of maritime and port staff, fostering a culture of safety, operational excellence, and teamwork.
· Act as the main point of contact between port authorities, shipping companies, and other key stakeholders.
· Make quick, informed decisions during emergencies, unforeseen events, or operational disruptions.
· Develop and implement port operational strategies that enhance efficiency, safety, and service delivery.
· Monitor port activities, assess performance, and make improvements where necessary.
· Opportunity to train as a pilot and take on combined duties as both Port Captain and Pilot.
The Requirements
· Master Mariner (FG) with sailing experience as a Captain or senior chief officer
· Minimum 5 years of sailing experience as a Captain or senior chief officer
· Master Mariner (FG) qualification
· Relevant experience as Port Captain / Port Manager / transhipment
· Relevant training, extensive knowledge and experience in SHEQ and Mine Health and Safety Act.
· Proven and measurable supportive leadership of safety behaviours and systems within a large project commissioning and ramp up environment.
· SAP knowledge in PM and MM modules.
· Broad Knowledge of All Engineering Design & Principles
· Proven experience as a Captain, with a deep understanding of maritime operations and port management.
· Extensive Knowledge of National and International Standards
· Sound knowledge of Engineering Management techniques, -tools and -software
· Extensive Management of Department
· Experience in training and mentoring maritime staff.
· Experience working in remote areas of Africa.

· The position offers a 2-year contract with a competitive remuneration package on single status with a 7-3 FIFO roster.
