The Company

The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one of the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
Planning and Schedule Engineer Medium Term (Senior) is responsible for developing, managing and monitoring the medium-term mine planning and scheduling processes. The role involves collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure effective allocation of resources (equipment) for the execution of a medium-term plan that ensures optimal extraction of the resource in alignment with operational goals. The Medium-Term Planning and Scheduling Engineer will utilize mine planning and scheduling software to develop medium-term mine plans, which include a rolling 3-, 6- and 12-month plan, and monitor and adjust schedules as required to enhance efficiencies and productivity.
The Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain medium-term project plans that aligns with operational objectives and resource availability.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (geology, geotechnical and other mine planning engineers) to gather data and operational insights necessary to establish robust planning assumptions that will facilitate an accurate, achievable medium-range plan
- Create detailed medium-term project schedules, that are aligned with the Life of Mine Plan that outline key milestones, deliverables, and resource requirements.
- Coordinate the allocation of resources (labor, materials, equipment) to ensure optimal utilization and efficiency in project execution.
- Analyze project data and performance metrics to identify trends, potential issues/risks to the plan and any areas for improvement.
- Identify project risks and develop appropriate risk management strategies to mitigate potential impacts on project timelines and objectives.
The Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, or a related field; relevant certifications (e.g., Pr.Eng, PMP, CAPM) are preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in project planning and scheduling within mining or industrial environments.
- Proficient in using mine planning software for mine design and scheduling.
- Ideally Deswik proficiency to upskill the planning team on site (and MS Projects or similar).
