ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
This incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of mechanical systems and equipment used in port operations. The Mechanic / Specialist Mechanic plays a critical role to repair and maintain machinery, vehicles and equipment, ensuring that they are in optimal working conditions. This role is vital for the seamless operation of port logistics, ensuring that mechanical systems are functioning at peak efficiency, minimizing downtime, and maintaining safety standards.
The Key Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled maintenance on various mechanical systems, including cranes, conveyors, forklifts, and other port equipment.
- Diagnose and fix mechanical issues to minimize downtime and ensure safe operation of all equipment.
- Responsible for routine maintenance, repairs, and upgrades on mechanical systems, vehicles, and equipment used in port operations, including cranes, forklifts, conveyor systems, trucks, and other machinery.
- Utilize specialized diagnostic tools and methods to identify mechanical problems and respond to equipment failures, implementing effective solutions to restore operations.
- Work closely with other maintenance staff, engineers, and port operations personnel to ensure smooth coordination of tasks.
- Ensure all mechanical work is performed in compliance with safety standards and regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance activities, and inspections.
- Report any issues or concerns related to equipment performance or safety to supervisors.
The Requirements
- High school Diploma or equivalent; vocational Training or Certification in Mechanical Maintenance preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, preferably in a port or industrial setting.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulic systems, and troubleshooting techniques.
- Proficient in diagnosing and repairing a wide range of mechanical equipment and systems.
- Experience with welding, machining, and other mechanical fabrication techniques.
- Experience working in remote areas of Africa.
