The Role
The Master Driller provides technical leadership and operational oversight for all drilling operations within the mine, including production drilling, exploration drilling, and blast-hole optimization. This role ensures drilling efficiency, safety, quality, and integration with blasting, earthworks, and mine production targets.
The Key Responsibilities
Drilling Operations Leadership
- Lead and manage all drilling operations across the mine site, ensuring high productivity, quality, and safety standards.
- Develop and implement drilling schedules, methodologies, and operational procedures to meet production and exploration targets.
- Monitor drilling performance metrics, including penetration rates, bit life, hole quality, and alignment with blast design.
Technical Drilling & Blast Integration
- Provide expert guidance on drill and blast design to optimize fragmentation, minimize overbreak, and enhance mine productivity.
- Evaluate rock mechanics, lithology, and ground conditions to select appropriate drill rigs, bits, and drilling parameters.
- Collaborate with blasting engineers and geologists to ensure drilling aligns with mine planning and production objectives.
Equipment & Maintenance Management
- Oversee drill rig selection, operation, and preventive maintenance programs to maximize availability and efficiency
- Implement equipment condition monitoring and asset management practices to reduce breakdowns and operational risk.
- Ensure drills and associated equipment are operated within manufacturer specifications and safety limits.
Team Leadership & Training
- Lead, mentor, and develop drilling crews, ensuring adherence to safety, operational, and technical standards.
- Establish competency frameworks and conduct training programs for drill operators, mechanics, and supervisors.
- Foster a safety-first, performance-oriented, and collaborative team culture.
Health, Safety, and Environment
- Implement and monitor HSE policies for all drilling operations, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and incident reporting.
- Ensure compliance with mines site safety procedures, emergency protocols, and PPE requirements.
- Promote environmentally responsible drilling practices, including dust suppression, water management, and site rehabilitation.
The Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, mechanical engineering, or an equivalent technical field
- 15+ years of experience in mining drilling operations, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
- Expert knowledge of drill and blast practices, rig operations, and mine planning integration
- Experience with production and exploration drilling in hard rock mining environments
- Strong understanding of rock mechanics, geology, and blast design principles
- Proficiency with drilling software, rig telemetry, and mine management systems

- The position offers a 2-year contract with a competitive remuneration package on single status with a 7-3 FIFO roster.
