ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one of the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The Port Marine Pilot is a specialized maritime professional responsible for the safe navigation of ships as they enter or leave ports, harbors, and other restricted waters. Their primary duty is to guide vessels through challenging areas where local knowledge and expertise are crucial for safe passage. This role will progress to include port captaincy functions similar to Capt.
The Key Responsibilities
· Pilotage: Provide precise navigational instructions to the ship’s captain and crew, ensuring the vessel manoeuvres safely through narrow channels, shallow waters, and busy harbors. Pilot vessels of varying sizes through the port, from the entrance to the dock.
· Docking and Undocking: Oversee the ship’s docking and undocking procedures, coordinating with tugboats and shore-based personnel as needed.
· Route Planning: Determine the best route through the port area, considering current conditions such as tides, weather, and traffic.
· Stay current with advancements in maritime technology and navigation techniques.
· Act as a key figure in emergency situations, including vessel incidents or environmental hazards, providing guidance and taking appropriate action.
· Shows a keen understanding of and ability to use modern navigational tools and maritime technology.
· Capable of giving clear, concise instructions and reports.
The Requirements
· A degree or diploma from a recognized maritime academy or university, such as a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation, Maritime Studies, or Nautical Science, is highly advantageous.
· Coursework usually includes navigation, ship handling, maritime law, meteorology, and safety protocols
· A minimum of 5-10 years of experience working at sea is generally required.
· Experience as a Deck Officer or Ship’s Captain is particularly valuable. These roles provide practical knowledge of ship operations, navigation, and management, which are crucial for a pilot.
· Experience on a variety of vessels (e.g., cargo ships, tankers, container ships) is beneficial, as it provides a broader understanding of different ship dynamics and handling characteristics.

· The position offers a 2-year contract with a competitive remuneration package on single status with a 7-3 FIFO roster.
