The Company
ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one of the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The successful incumbent will assist in the safe operations of the AML mine by performing several environment-focused duties. He/she will also perform environmental monitoring and sampling duties to maintain compliance with site permits and conserve environmental integrity.
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to take part in various projects including reclamation, hydrological monitoring, and environmental effects monitoring, among others.
The Key Responsibilities
- Manage site environmental compliance, reporting, and statutory investigations; integrating good environmental management into everyday practices, and influencing all site personnel and management to do the same
- Interacting and communicating effectively within a multidisciplinary team consisting of environmental professionals, engineers, and contractors
- Ensuring water, dustfall, and particle samples are handled correctly while in the field, packaged for shipping appropriately, and shipped to achieve prescribed hold times and temperatures
- Ensuring biodiversity management and monitoring programs, including sampling and testing as requested
- Working safely and contributing to efficient Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) practices
- Participating in field projects, including hydrology, groundwater, in-stream, and environmental effects monitoring.
- Implementing erosion and sediment control best practices and progressive reclamation activities; liaise with biodiversity lead to determine nature’s positive pathway
- Monitoring water retaining and drainage structures to ensure capacity for runoff
The Requirements
- Tertiary qualification/ University degree in Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering or similar
- Experience with environmental monitoring and sampling, including stream/lake sampling, benthic/sediment, groundwater, fish/vegetation, and erosion/sedimentation
- Strong understanding of ISO14001, IFC E&S PS, and environment legislation/ best practice
- Significant experience in putting in place Environment Management Plans (EMP), permit applications, and knowledge in the management of water and treatment plants, air, waste and biodiversity within a mining context
- Demonstrated leadership and performance development experience in a multi-disciplinary environment
The Rewards
The position offers a 2-year contract with a competitive remuneration package on single status with a 7-3 FIFO roster.
