The Company
ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.
Join us at ArcelorMittal Liberia, where your work will contribute to redefining steel for a new generation, driving innovation, and embracing diversity.
The Role
The successful candidate will be responsible to develop the ground control management plan (GCMP) to establish processes, formalize and consolidate the systems used to manage geotechnical hazards at a mine for pit walls, stockpiles and waste dumps for current mine operation. An action plan with priorities addressing areas requiring action by identifying geotechnical risks associated with mine developments; developing control measures to reduce risks to a level that is as low as practically possible. Contributing to the review of geotechnical pit design, implementation, and operational management of an open pit. Geotechnical Risk management.
The role reports to the Technical Services Manager.
The Key Responsibilities
- Main accountabilities of the role typically include ensuring geotechnical activities are conducted safely to provide a safe working environment for employees and contractors in accordance with company standards and government legislation. Comply with safety standards of the company.
- The Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for providing geotechnical & mining engineering technical support to the
- Mining department to ensure that the mine functions effectively and safely.
- Open pit stability assessment and design including field investigation programs, structural analysis, kinematic
- assessments, rock mass characterization, slope stability analysis, and development of design criteria. Collect
- geotechnical data on the rock mass, monitoring of the performance of the excavation slopes and installed support
- Geotechnical inspection and design audits of operating open pit mines and Tailing dams/ Stockpiles/Waste dumps.
- Assessment and remedial design for complex modes of slope instability including assessment of slope monitoring data, evaluation of monitoring thresholds, slope failure prediction, development of safe operating procedures (SOPs), and
- trigger action response plans/procedures (TARPs).
- The GCMP needs to be continuously compared to generally acceptable international standards for ground control management plans for comparable operations. If required, the Engineer needs to recommend additional work that needs to be carried out to improve the GCMP, e.g. Geotechnical Design, Implementation, and Verification.
- Management and integration of hydrogeological data with geotechnical data for review of pit design.
- Design, installation, maintenance and use of geotechnical instrumentation to assess the response of the rock mass to the mining activities; and for the interpretation and reporting of data collected.
- Must have knowledge of short and medium term mine planning and designing experience
The Requirements
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering with further qualification in Rock Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering from recognized university.
- Essential
- Minimum of total 10 years of experience in open pit Mine Planning and designing preferably Iron ore mine out of which should have minimum of 5 years of experience in suitable role in field of Geotechnical Engineering.
