The Company
ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership.  The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated. 
 
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
 
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024.  The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The Data analyst plays a crucial role in an open pit mining operation. They analyse various types of data to optimize mining processes, track compliance to plan, increase efficiency and improve safety through ongoing analysis of data. They are also responsible for the coordinating collation of operational data for daily, weekly and monthly reporting. In addition, they play a crucial role during preparation of the outputs required for monthly planning, forecasting and for compilation of the annual business unit plan. Data analysis significantly enhances decision-making in mining by providing valuable insights and actionable information.
 
The Key Responsibilities

  • Data Collection and Analysis: Gather and analyze data from various sources, this includes sensors, measuring equipment, the fleet management system and geological and mine surveys.
  • Analysis: Analyze large datasets. Process and interpret large datasets, leading to more informed decision-making and improved operational efficiency and for reporting of performance.
  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor and evaluate the performance of mining operations, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Predictive Modeling: Develop predictive models to forecast production rates, equipment failures, and other critical metrics.
  • Reporting: Prepare detailed reports and visualizations to communicate findings to management and other stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, geologists, and other team members to ensure data-driven decision-making.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure that all data analysis activities comply with safety regulations and industry standards.

 
  
 
The Requirements

  • Proficiency in data analysis tools
  • g., SQL, Python, R
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication abilities.

  • The position offers a 2-year contract with a competitive remuneration package on single status with a 7-3 FIFO roster.
