ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated. 
 
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
 
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024.  The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
 
This incumbent will be responsible for monitoring and controlling the operations of the concentrator plant from the control room. The Control Room Operator Specialist role is crucial for overseeing the safe and efficient processing of materials within a facility. ensuring the safe and efficient processing of materials, managing equipment operations and responding to system alarms and notifications.
The Control Room Operator Specialist work closely with the operations team to optimize performance and maintain product quality while adhering to safety and environmental regulations.
 
The Key Responsibilities

  • Monitoring the performance of a concentrator plant (or any industrial processing plant) in real-time through control room displays and instrumentation.
  • To ensure optimal processing conditions and track key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational parameters, it’s essential to define, monitor, and analyze these metrics continuously.
  • Operating and controlling equipment within a concentrator, which processes ores to extract valuable minerals, requires specialized knowledge and skills to ensure efficient and safe operation.
  • Continuously monitor systems for alarms and alerts. When an alarm is triggered, assess its severity and urgency.
  • Effective communication with field operators and maintenance personnel is critical for smooth operations and resolving issues promptly. 
  • To effectively maintain accurate records of operational data, including production outputs, equipment performance, and incidents, as well as prepare and submit daily reports.
  • Responsible for Safety protocols and Environmental Regulations when operating equipment in the control room. 
  • To assist in training new control room operators and contribute to the ongoing skill development for the team.

The Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Technical Degree or certification in process operations or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years plus of experience in a control room or operations role, specifically within a Mining or mineral processing environment, is required
  • Familiarity with Concentrator Processes & Equipment will be an advantage.
