ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one of the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The Civil and Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining civil engineering projects and infrastructure within the ArcelorMittal mine in Liberia. This role involves overseeing the development of infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, drainage systems, and other civil works essential for mining operations. The Engineer will ensure that all projects are executed to the highest quality, safety, and efficiency standards, and will collaborate with various stakeholders to support operational needs and improve infrastructure performance.
The Key Responsibilities
- Develop and design civil engineering projects, including roads, bridges, drainage systems, and other infrastructure essential for mining operations.
- Prepare scoping documents, user requirement specifications/ design specifications, execution schedules, and supporting technical documentation for infrastructure projects.
- Manage and oversee infrastructure projects from inception to completion, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution.
- Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and internal teams to ensure that project objectives are met and that work is completed on time and within budget.
- Develop commercial contracts with the Supply Chain Team and manage contracts accordingly, including commercial claims management based on contractual quantities.
- Supervise construction activities to ensure compliance with design specifications, safety regulations, and quality standards.
- Monitor project progress, manage resources, and address any issues or delays that arise during construction.
The Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in civil engineering with a focus on infrastructure development and management.
- Proven experience in managing infrastructure projects and maintenance activities in a mining or industrial setting.
- Extensive knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices related to infrastructure development and maintenance.
- Experience with designing and managing infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, and drainage systems for both green fields and brown fields mining environments.
