ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one of the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The Chief Surveyor is responsible for overseeing all survey-related activities, managing survey teams, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of survey data, and supporting various departments in the planning, development, and construction processes. This role will lead the survey operations for large-scale projects, including but not limited to land, underground, or geospatial surveys, to meet project requirements while maintaining safety and regulatory standards.
The Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team of surveyors, providing direction, training, and development to ensure high-quality survey data.
- Develop and implement surveying methods, equipment, and tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Conduct detailed land and geospatial surveys for new construction projects, monitoring work progress and ensuring compliance with all legal, environmental, and safety regulations.
- Design and develop detailed survey plans, including schedules, equipment requirements, and work scope, for all surveying activities.
- Ensure the collection, processing, and analysis of survey data for land and infrastructure projects.
- Prepare comprehensive survey reports, maps, and CAD drawings for project stakeholders.
- Ensure that survey operations comply with national and local regulations, as well as industry best practices and standards.
The Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in surveying, including 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Registered Professional Surveyor (RPS) or equivalent certification preferred.
Skills:
- Proficient in survey equipment and software (e.g., Total Stations, GPS, CAD, GIS).
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Excellent knowledge of surveying methods, legal regulations, and health & safety protocols.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
