Broadly speaking, yes, there is a shortage of geologists in Australia. Especially in the mining, exploration, and critical-minerals space. But the picture is nuanced.
Here’s what we know:
Evidence that there’s a shortage
In the Critical Minerals Strategy 2023–2030, the Australian government notes a national shortage in geologists, hydrogeologists, geotechnical and processing engineers.
But where are they seeing it?
Decline in geoscience enrolments
Universities across Australia, including Newcastle and Macquarie, have been cutting or restructuring geoscience and earth science departments. The reason given? Falling enrolments.
The Australian Geoscience Council’s Tertiary Geoscience Education Profile shows that student enrolments in the field have dropped significantly over the past decade. In some cases dropping by as much as 40-50%. This means fewer new geologists are coming into the system.
Workforce skills projections
We’re entering a technical skills shortage period. Large numbers of workers at retirement age are exiting or preparing to exit the workforce. Hard-rock operation, critical minerals, gold, and remote locations are consistently finding it difficult to source qualified geologists. And the mining industry is projected to need tens of thousands of new workers over the next decade to support demand for battery metals.
Supply vs demand mismatch
In previous workforce-planning industry outlooks (e.g. AusIMM), geologists are flagged as “supply risk” roles. In other words, potential vulnerabilities.
But finding geologists with the “right mix” of experience is increasingly difficult. It’s not just about numbers. The type of geologist matters, and that makes the pool even narrower.
In the March 2025 Occupation Shortage Report by Job Skills Australia, the fill rate for roles overall was ~69.7%. But regional roles lagged behind metropolitan ones. Specialised technical roles (including geoscience) in remote/regional settings tend to have lower fill rates. So there’s a higher difficulty to fill.
But “shortage” comes with qualifiers
The shortage is more acute in specialist, senior, field-proven geologists, or those with experience in certain commodities (e.g. rare earths, battery metals, structural geology) or in tough environments (deep drilling, remote terrains). Casual or junior positions are somewhat easier to fill (though still not trivial).
The ‘pipeline’ issue is critical. Because fewer students choose to or can complete geoscience degrees, the long lead time between degree enrolments and production-ready geologists means gaps are felt several years out.
Some regions (e.g. Western Australia, with a strong mining presence) are better able to attract geologists than others. Remote or less prolific states suffer disproportionately.
Economics, corporate cycles, commodity prices, and regulatory changes shift demand dramatically. Times of exploration booms intensify pressure on supply, whereas downturns can ‘mask’ shortages.
The bottom line (from a mining industry recruiter’s lens)
There is a shortage (or at least a supply stress) of geologists in Australia. This, especially for mid- to senior-level geologists with specialised skillsets.
The risk of this shortage getting worse is very real. The education/training system is shrinking, and the industry is chasing higher technical barriers (e.g. deeper drilling, critical minerals, more remote sites).
So, what does this mean for mining companies? In our opinion, you need to hire early, invest in retention, partner with universities, and be willing to pay a premium.
