Sukari is located approximately 750km from Cairo and 25km from Marsa Alam on the Red Sea. First gold was poured in June 2009 and commercial production began in April 2010, making Sukari the first modern gold mine in Egypt, a country which in ancient times was a prolific producer of the precious metal. Sukari conducts both open-pit and underground mining operations, each employing specialised mining methods tailored to the orebody characteristics and operational requirements.
 
The Role
 
The UG Geotech Lab Technician provides dedicated geotechnical laboratory testing and underground 3D scanning support to Sukari underground operations under the direction of the UG Senior Geotechnical Engineer. The role prepares and tests rock, shotcrete, concrete, grout and paste fill samples to deliver accurate, traceable data for ground support, backfill and design decisions.
The position also conducts in-cycle underground laser scanning using the Maptek scanner, processes point cloud data in Point Studio and supports the full QA-QC programme for shotcrete, ground support and paste fill in line with AngloGold Ashanti Geotechnical Engineering standards.

The Key Responsibilities
 

• Receive, register, label, prepare, cure, store and dispose of rock, shotcrete, concrete, grout and paste fill samples in line with approved methods and site procedures.
• Perform UCS, RDP, point load, particle size distribution, moisture content, density, grout and aggregate testing to provide reliable data for design, support and re-entry decisions.
• Conduct in-cycle underground laser scans using the Maptek scanner and process point clouds in PointStudio to produce design-versus-actual, overbreak, underbreak and shotcrete thickness outputs.
• Execute planned QA-QC sampling and testing for shotcrete, ground support and paste fill, support rock bolt and cable bolt pull testing, and escalate out-of-specification results on the same shift.
• Enter all test and scan data accurately on the day of testing and compile daily summaries and monthly QA-QC reports for engineering review.
• Operate, clean and maintain laboratory equipment and the laser scanner, track calibration status, and maintain laboratory housekeeping, consumables and sample storage.
• Apply safe laboratory and underground work practices, report hazards and non-conformances promptly, and comply with AngloGold Ashanti standards and site EMS requirements.

 
The Requirements
 

• Technical Diploma or Higher Technical Institute qualification in Mining, Geology or Materials / Laboratory Technology, or equivalent
• 1-2 years’ experience in a geotechnical, materials or construction testing laboratory, or in underground mining technical support
• Experience with rock, concrete or shotcrete compression testing strongly preferred
• Exposure to laser scanning, surveying or point cloud software advantageous
• Valid underground mine induction and medical fitness certification required
• Valid driving licence and underground light vehicle authorisation as per SGM rules
• Site authorisation to operate laboratory test equipment, pull-test equipment and the laser scanner as per site procedures
• Professional Arabic and English for reporting, documentation and frontline communication
• Ability to split time between the surface geotechnical laboratory and underground work areas
• Availability to perform time-critical tests outside normal hours when directed
