The Role
The Specialist – Road and Earthwork provides expert technical leadership in the design, construction, and maintenance of haul roads and earthworks to ensure optimal equipment performance, reduced operating costs, and safe, efficient mines operations.
The Key Responsibilities
- Design and optimize haul road geometry, including width, gradient, crossfall, super-elevation, and curvature, in accordance with OEM and international standards.
- Develop pavement structures (subgrade, subbase, base, wearing course) based on geotechnical conditions, traffic loading, and material availability.
- Apply road design software and modelling tools to ensure alignment with mine planning and fleet requirements.
- Plan and supervise bulk earthworks, including cut and fill operations, dump construction, and pad preparation.
- Ensure proper material selection, placement, and compaction in accordance with geotechnical specifications.
- Optimize earthmoving productivity through equipment selection, fleet balance, and cycle efficiency.
- Establish and implement road maintenance strategies, including grading, watering, resurfacing, and drainage management.
- Monitor and control road defects such as rutting, corrugation, potholes, and erosion.
- Ensure effective drainage systems (culverts, berms, side drains) to prevent water damage and maintain road integrity.
- Identify and implement improvements in haul road performance to reduce fuel consumption, tire wear, and equipment maintenance costs.
The Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, mining engineering, or related discipline
- 8–10+ years’ experience in large-scale open-pit mining or heavy civil earthworks
- Proven expatriate experience in remote mining operations
- Strong knowledge of haul road design standards (e.g., Caterpillar, Komatsu guidelines)
- Experience with geotechnical testing, road design software, and earthworks planning tools
