The Role
To provide technical leadership to design and govern safe, optimized open pit mine plans. The role integrates geotechnical, environmental, and operational constraints to maximize Life of Mine (LOM) value and ensure production targets are met.
 
The Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Optimisation: Develop staged pit and waste dump designs; run Whittle/strategic optimizations to quantify value drivers.
  • Planning & Scheduling: Lead short-term execution plans (daily/weekly) and long-term forecasts (Annual/LOM), integrating haulage and equipment constraints.
  • Performance Tracking: Reconcile actual production against plans to identify variance root causes and drive continuous improvement.
  • Safety & Governance: Embed “Safety in Design” principles; ensure compliance with geotechnical standards and JORC-aligned ore reserve reporting.
  • Technical Leadership: Mentor junior engineers and facilitate cross-functional reviews with Survey, Geotech, and Blast teams.

 
The Requirements
Education & Qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Master’s Degree in Mining Engineering or Mining Systems (preferred).
  • Formal training in mine planning, optimisation, and economic evaluation. (Chartered professional)

 Experience, Knowledge and Skills

  • Minimum 8 years’ post‑graduate experience in open pit mining, including at least 2 years in mine planning/technical services.
  • Preferred 8+ years across mine planning, drill & blast interface, and production support roles.
  • Valid driving license for on-site travel (required where applicable).
  • Site open pit permit / authorisation for pit access (required).
  • Proficiency in Surpac/Vulcan (design) and Alastri (scheduling), Deswik.
  • Deep understanding of mineral economics, cut-off grade concepts, and geotechnical controls.
  • Strong ability to analyze survey/operations data to fix plan deviations.
  • Proven ability to influence operational stakeholders and translate complex scenarios into executable, value-based decisions.
