Job SummaryReporting to the Engineering Superintendent, the Senior Mine Engineer will be responsible for providing technical leadership and hands-on engineering support to both open-pit and underground mining operations. This role plays a critical part in mine planning, design, scheduling, and operational optimization from early start-up through ramp-up and steady-state operations.
The Senior Mine Engineer will act as the cross-shift counterpart to the Engineering Superintendent, ensuring continuity of engineering leadership and decision-making during the Superintendent’s absences. This position requires strong technical expertise in both open-pit and underground mining, as well as the ability to operate autonomously on site.
Key Responsibilities
- Mine Planning & Engineering
- Conduct pit optimization for open-pit operations and stope optimization for underground mining to define economically optimal mining limits.
- Estimate mineral resources, determine cut-off grades, and support mineral reserve calculations through technical analysis and economic evaluation.
- Prepare detailed mine designs including pit phases, stope layouts, development plans, and production schedules.
- Develop and maintain short-, medium-, and long-term mine plans aligned with production targets, cost objectives, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to annual mine planning, budgeting, and production forecasting.
- Support the design and optimization of underground infrastructure including ramps, ventilation networks, dewatering systems, and material handling systems.
- Evaluate and update mining fleet requirements and equipment replacement plans to support operational efficiency.
Operational Support & Optimization
- Provide direct engineering support to site operations during commissioning, ramp-up, and steady-state production.
- Collaborate with geology, mining operations, and processing teams to optimize mine design and sequencing.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve mine planning practices, sequencing, and operational efficiency.
- Support the integration of new technologies, digital tools, and automation solutions within engineering processes.
- Liaise with contractors, suppliers, and consultants to ensure quality and timely execution of engineering work.
Leadership & Team Development
- Support the Engineering Superintendent in leading the Mine Engineering team and delivering engineering objectives.
- Contribute to engineering strategy development and provide technical recommendations to the Mine Manager.
- Assist in the recruitment, development, and mentoring of engineering personnel.
- Communicate work objectives, priorities, and performance expectations to support production targets.
- Participate in performance reviews and provide technical feedback and coaching to engineering staff.
- Provide engineering leadership and decision-making support when acting on behalf of the Engineering Superintendent.
- Compliance, Safety & Sustainability
- Ensure engineering activities comply with company standards, Guyanese regulations, and industry best practices.
- Promote and support health, safety, and environmental best practices across all engineering activities.
- Identify, report, and address unsafe conditions and behaviors in accordance with company procedures.
- Provide visible safety leadership to engineering teams, contractors, and site personnel to support a zero-harm culture.
- Support environmental management initiatives and ensure compliance with permitting requirements.
Requirements Experience
- Experience supporting greenfield mining project development and operational ramp-up is highly desirable.
- Strong project coordination and leadership skills within multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in mining software such as Deswik, GEOVIA Whittle, Datamine, Hexagon (MinePlan/MineSight), Surpac, or Civil 3D.
- Experience with underground mine infrastructure including ventilation, dewatering, and power distribution systems.
- Knowledge of applicable mining regulations and operational standards.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in a site-based environment while supporting management and operational teams.
Education / Certification / Designation
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering (Master’s degree considered an asset).
- 8–12 years of mining operation and engineering experience.
