Sukari is located approximately 750km from Cairo and 25km from Marsa Alam on the Red Sea. First gold was poured in June 2009, and commercial production began in April 2010, making Sukari the first modern gold mine in Egypt, a country which in ancient times was a prolific producer of the precious metal. Sukari conducts both open-pit and underground mining operations, each employing specialised mining methods tailored to the orebody characteristics and operational requirements.

The Role

The Safety Officer supports safe work execution across Sukari by ensuring employees and contractors work and behave in the safest way possible. The role focuses on identifying hazards, assessing risk, implementing control measures, and verifying that site safety rules, procedures, and HSE requirements are applied in the field.
Reporting to the Safety Supervisor, the role conducts daily area inspections, reviews permit, supports training and emergency preparedness, monitors compliance, and follows up incidents, investigations, and corrective actions to maintain safe operations across designated areas.

The Key Responsibilities

• Hazard identification and risk control: Identify HSE risks, assess site hazards, take immediate action to control hazards, and work with the HSE Supervisor to implement suitable controls.
• Inspections and field verification: Conduct daily tours, monthly inspections, prestarts for equipment, PPE checks, and regular compliance inspections in designated areas.
• Permits and operational safety: Review and issue permit to work, support shutdown permit reviews, carry out atmosphere testing, and verify safe work conditions before activities begin.
• Training and awareness: Support HSE training delivery, assist departments in identifying training needs, ensure visitors comply with site rules and PPE requirements, and contribute to safety leadership in the field.
• Reporting and incident follow-up: Prepare weekly and monthly safety reports, attend safety meetings and shift prestarts, and follow up incident reports, investigations, and corrective actions.
• Emergency preparedness: Support emergency response activities, attend emergency training and exercises, and check emergency readiness including cyanide cabins and related equipment.
• Documentation and compliance: Maintain safety files, records, and calibration records, ensure data is recorded and reviewed, and monitor compliance with legal requirements, procedures, policies, and contractor management controls.

The Requirements

• Scientific degree in Science, Agriculture, Engineering or similar
• NEBOSH certificate or equivalent experience
• Train the trainer certificate
• 3 to 5 years of professional experience in a similar position
• Excellent knowledge of Egyptian HSE legislation and its application to mining activities
• Good command of English
• Microsoft Office proficiency
• Ability to write and present reports
• Strong interpersonal, communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills
• Team player with the ability to work with a diverse group of individuals
• LV site and mine licence
• Experience with site inductions, area-specific induction, and work permits
• Behaviour consistent with company values and sound planning skills
