Underground Planning Superintendent

Sukari is located approximately 750km from Cairo and 25km from Marsa Alam on the Red Sea. First gold was poured in June 2009 and commercial production began in April 2010, making Sukari the first modern gold mine in Egypt, a country which in ancient times was a prolific producer of the precious metal. Sukari conducts both open-pit and underground mining operations, each employing specialized mining methods tailored to the orebody characteristics and operational requirements.

  • Location: On-site in Marsa Alam
  • Contract Type: Permanent, full-time
  • Schedule: 6weeks/3weeks working roster
  • Compensation: Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package

The Role

We are seeking a UG Planning Superintendent to direct our underground planning function. In this role, you will lead the delivery of safe, optimized, and cost-effective short-, medium-, and long-term mine plans aligned with our Life-of-Mine (LOM) strategy. You will oversee design validation, constraint-based Deswik scheduling, and cross-functional integration across geology, geotechnical engineering, ventilation, and site operations.

The Key Responsibilities

  • Mine Plan Integration & Optimization: Develop and maintain short-, medium-, and long-term underground schedules using Deswik, embedding geotechnical, ventilation, and infrastructure constraints into executable plans.
  • Technical Assurance: Validate and sign off on stope layouts, development designs, drilling rings, and drill & blast inputs to eliminate design errors, manage dilution, and prevent production delays.
  • Schedule Reconciliation & Performance Analytics: Drive plan vs. actual reconciliations (meters, tonnes, grade, dilution), maintaining Power BI dashboards to improve forecasting accuracy and cycle times.
  • Safety & Compliance Governance: Embed statutory safety regulations, site SOPs, and critical ground control/ventilation limits into all design outputs.
  • Team Leadership & Alignment: Lead, mentor, and build capability across a team of 3 direct reports (including Senior UG Mining Engineers) while chairing cross-functional planning forums.
  • Financial & Cost Discipline: Formulate planning-driven OPEX forecasts and capital development assumptions to support rolling budget cycles.

The Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent. (Postgraduate qualifications or professional mine planning certifications preferred).
  • Experience: 9–11 years of underground mining experience, with at least 5 years in dedicated mine planning roles.
  • Leadership: Proven track record supervising engineering teams and driving cross-functional alignment.
  • Technical Expertise: Advanced mastery of Deswik (CAD, Scheduler, scenario modelling) and working knowledge of Surpac.
  • Mining Knowledge: Deep domain expertise in longhole open stoping, backfill/paste sequencing, ground support classes, and drill & blast QA/QC.
  • Analytics & Systems: Proficiency with Excel, Power BI, and SAP/CMMS interfaces.
  • Licensing & Physical: Valid driver’s license, site physical fitness for regular underground inspections, and required site authorizations.
