Senior UG Mining Engineer

Sukari is located approximately 750km from Cairo and 25km from Marsa Alam on the Red Sea. First gold was poured in June 2009 and commercial production began in April 2010, making Sukari the first modern gold mine in Egypt, a country which in ancient times was a prolific producer of the precious metal. Sukari conducts both open-pit and underground mining operations, each employing specialised mining methods tailored to the orebody characteristics and operational requirements.

The Role

AngloGold Ashanti is seeking a Senior UG Mining Engineer for Sukari in Egypt. The role provides technical leadership for underground production planning, drill and blast engineering, and life-of-mine ventilation modelling to support safe, compliant, and cost-effective ore extraction.
The position translates long-range strategy into executable mid- and short-term plans, monitors delivery against targets, and drives continuous optimisation of stope sequencing, blasting outcomes, and ventilation performance. Working closely with operations, geology, survey, geotechnical, ventilation, maintenance, projects, and HSE teams, the role ensures designs and schedules are risk-based, approval-controlled, and aligned with site governance and statutory requirements.

  • Location: Egypt
  • Contract Type: Permanent
  • Roster: 20/10

The Key Responsibilities

  • Production scheduling and deployment: Develop 3-month, quarterly, and annual underground production schedules aligned with the approved LOM plan, integrating development, stope sequencing, backfill, equipment availability, and geotechnical constraints.
  • Drill and blast design oversight: Design and optimise drill patterns, charging plans, and firing sequences to achieve fragmentation, recovery, and dilution targets while minimising overbreak and rework.
  • Ventilation engineering and modelling: Maintain life-of-mine ventilation models and define airflow, contaminant control, and re-entry requirements for active headings, stopes, and development areas.
  • Performance monitoring and variance control: Monitor weekly and monthly performance against plan, identify drivers of variance, and provide decision-ready dashboards and technical reports for UG leadership.
  • Cross-functional technical integration: Coordinate with operations, geology, survey, ore control, geotechnical, ventilation, maintenance, and projects teams to ensure designs reflect validated data, constraints, and execution priorities.
  • Risk and compliance assurance: Embed blasting, ventilation, and ground control critical controls into designs and schedules, support underground inspections, and maintain audit-ready approvals and technical records.
  • Coaching and continuous improvement: Mentor junior engineers, review technical work products, and use reconciliation and incident learnings to improve planning standards, design quality, and operational performance.

The Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum 6–8 years’ experience in underground mining operations
  • Experience in mid-term planning and scheduling, drill and blast design and optimisation, ventilation design and modelling, and cross-functional coordination
  • Proficiency in Deswik and VentSim; working knowledge of Surpac and/or AutoCAD
  • Advanced capability in Excel and Power BI for analysis and reporting
  • Medical fitness certificate for underground work
  • Underground driving authorisation where applicable
  • Blasting Certificate and Explosives Handling Permit as required by site or statutory requirements
  • Mine Ventilation Certificate preferred or required per site rules
  • Professional proficiency in Arabic and English for reporting, documentation, and safety communication
