Senior Exploration Geologist
With the acquisition of Centamin in November 2024, AngloGold Ashanti acquired two exploration licenses in Egypt’s highly prospective Eastern Desert. The EDX Blocks comprise 1,389km2 of greenfield exploration tenements within the Egyptian section (Eastern Desert) of the Arabian Nubian Shield.
The area represents a significant land package of highly prospective but underexplored geological terrane.
The Role
AngloGold Ashanti is seeking a Senior Exploration Geologist to lead site-based exploration programmes at EDX. The role is responsible for the design and execution of RC and Diamond drilling campaigns, geological interpretation, QAQC governance, and supervision of exploration teams to ensure high-quality geological data and effective target evaluation.
The Senior Exploration Geologist provides technical leadership across drill planning, structural interpretation, sampling strategy, and geological modelling. The role supports the efficient delivery of exploration programmes within budget and in compliance with company standards for safety, environment, and data management, while contributing to target definition and longer-term mineral resource development strategies.
- Location: Egypt
- Contract Type: Permanent
- Schedule: Site-based operations
The Key Responsibilities
- Drill programme design and implementation: Design RC and Diamond drilling programmes, determine collar locations, azimuth and dip parameters, optimise drill spacing, and ensure programmes achieve geological objectives within approved budgets.
- Geological interpretation and target generation: Interpret geological, structural and geochemical data, develop geological models, approve end-of-hole decisions, refine targeting strategies, and identify new exploration opportunities.
- QAQC governance: Oversee the QAQC framework for drilling programmes, review QAQC results, investigate discrepancies, ensure implementation of standards including blanks and duplicates, and drive corrective actions where required.
- Team supervision and field operations: Supervise geologists, field technicians and sampling teams, coordinate daily field activities, ensure productivity, and support the technical development of junior geologists.
- Sample management and laboratory control: Review sample preparation processes, approve sample dispatch to laboratories, ensure sample traceability and documentation, and minimise contamination risks.
- Drilling contractor performance management: Coordinate with RC and Diamond drilling contractors, monitor cost per metre and operational performance, and support contractor performance evaluation within approved budget variance.
- Data management, reporting and HSE: Validate geological and drilling data, review reports before submission, ensure documentation quality, demonstrate safety leadership, and ensure compliance with HSE standards in field operations.
The Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Geology.
- Minimum 8 years’ exploration geology experience.
- Experience designing drilling programmes.
- Experience supervising RC drilling operations.
- Experience supervising Diamond drilling operations.
- Experience implementing QAQC frameworks.
- Experience supervising geological teams.
- Experience in geological interpretation and modelling.
- Experience managing exploration field programmes.
- Strong technical expertise in exploration geology and mineral systems.
- Experience in structural geology interpretation, database validation, and geochemical analysis.
- Ability to evaluate geological risk, maintain data accuracy and quality control, and manage field priorities.
- Leadership, analytical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration skills.
- Commitment to safety standards, ethical behaviour, integrity, and adaptability to remote work environments.
