Graduate Paste Fill Engineer
Sukari is located approximately 750km from Cairo and 25km from Marsa Alam on the Red Sea. First gold was poured in June 2009 and commercial production began in April 2010, making Sukari the first modern gold mine in Egypt, a country which in ancient times was a prolific producer of the precious metal. Sukari conducts both open-pit and underground mining operations, each employing specialised mining methods tailored to the orebody characteristics and operational requirements.
The Role
We are looking for a Graduate Paste Fill Engineer for Sukari. To support the underground operations by assisting with backfill design inputs, fill scheduling, QA/QC testing, and monitoring of paste reticulation and stope placement under the guidance of the UG Senior Geotechnical Engineer.
The role supports underground stability and production continuity by helping verify that fill is placed to specification behind compliant barricades, that strength and curing criteria are met before re-entry or exposure, and that fill volumes, test results, and infrastructure condition are accurately recorded and reported. It is a structured development opportunity aligned to building in-house paste fill engineering capability toward the Senior Paste Fill Engineer career path.
- Location: Marsa Alam, Egypt
- Contract Type: Permanent
- Roster: 20/10 Days
The Key Responsibilities
- Paste Fill Planning and Scheduling: Assist with weekly and monthly fill schedules, maintain the fill status register, reconcile designed versus placed volumes, and support coordination between underground demand and paste plant capacity.
- Fill Design Support: Assist in determining required fill strength and binder content, prepare and verify design input data for review, support back-analysis of fill performance, and assist with sill mat and fill exposure design checks.
- QA/QC Testing and Records: Collect and log paste samples, prepare and cure test cylinders, conduct slump, rheology, solids density, and binder dosage checks, and maintain traceable batch-to-stope QA/QC records.
- Barricade and Reticulation Monitoring: Verify barricade readiness before filling, monitor pours against approved plans and rate limits, inspect boreholes, pipelines, valves, and reticulation infrastructure, and escalate deviations in line with TARP requirements.
- Reporting and Data Management: Compile daily, weekly, and monthly paste fill reports, maintain fill databases, registers, and drawings under version control, and prepare trend analysis and presentation material for technical and production reviews.
- Operational Coordination and Development: Coordinate with underground production, paste plant, planning, geotechnical, survey, and maintenance teams, follow up actions from coordination meetings, and participate actively in the structured graduate development programme.
- Safety and Compliance: Apply critical controls for fill inrush, barricade failure, exclusion zones, and re-entry, support geotechnical inspections, comply with underground safety requirements, and contribute to environmental and risk management obligations.
The Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent Engineering degree may be considered with relevant backfill or materials-testing exposure.
- 1–2 years’ experience in underground mining, backfill, geotechnical engineering, or materials testing, including internships and graduate placements.
- Exposure to paste or cemented backfill operations, fill QA/QC testing, or underground technical services is advantageous.
- Knowledge of paste backfill fundamentals, fill strength development, barricade controls, inrush risk management, and underground fill sequencing.
- Ability to collect, prepare, cure, and log paste samples and test cylinders in line with site procedures.
- Competence in monitoring pours, interpreting fill rate and rise rate data, and reconciling void volumes against placed paste volumes.
- Experience with mine planning, reporting, or database tools such as Deswik, Vulcan, Surpac, Excel, and Power BI is preferred.
- Professional Arabic and English for reporting, documentation, and operational communication.
- Registration or membership with the Egyptian Syndicate of Engineers in the mining engineering discipline.
- Valid underground mine induction and site safety certification, current self-rescuer and underground escape training certification, and a valid driving licence with required site authorisations.
