ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The Wagon Specialist – plays a crucial role in overseeing maintenance and repair operations, ensuring that all activities align with safety regulations and performance standards.
The incumbent will be responsible for conducting detailed diagnostics and develop maintenance schedules to ensure optimal performance.
The role includes leading projects, performing inspections with specialized equipment, managing budgets, providing technical support, and implementing strategies for performance improvement and optimization
The Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for maintenance and repairing of wagon components to ensure optimal performance.
- Perform diagnose problems, perform necessary repairs, and conduct regular maintenance checks on wagons and rolling stock.
- Quality Control inspections and quality control checks to ensure maintenance work aligns with established standards and regulatory requirements.
- Efficiently coordinate resources, including manpower, equipment, and materials, for effective maintenance execution.
- Enforce adherence to safety standards and procedures, minimizing risks and ensuring a safe work environment.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, incidents, and inspections, and prepare detailed reports for management review.
- Manage budgets for maintenance and repair activities, ensuring cost-effective operations.
- Implement strategies for performance improvement and optimization, continuously seeking ways to enhance efficiency and reliability.
- Develop a communication plan to ensure all external stakeholders are informed and engaged in relevant processes.
The Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a relevant field such as logistics, Engineering, or Transportation Management
- Minimum 3 years hands-on experience with wagon construction, maintenance, or repair is crucial.
- Familiarity with wagon design, mechanics, and safety standards. Knowledge of relevant tools and technologies used in wagon production and maintenance is important.
- Certificate in vehicle repair, safety compliance, or quality assurance may be beneficial.
- Ability to diagnose issues, implement solutions, and optimize performance is essential.
- Precision is critical when working with specifications and safety standards.
- Ability to collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and clients to ensure all requirements are met.
