Our client operates on a large-scale copper and cobalt deposits, both open pit and underground, with high-grade mineral reserves. Metals production is conducted using up-to-date metallurgical processing. They are one of the world’s largest diversified natural resource companies, producing and marketing over 90 commodities worldwide. The company’s operations include copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals mining.

The Role
 
Reporting to the Manager Underground Technical Services. The survey team plays an instrumental role in the provision of services that ensure safe and efficient underground Mining operations. The purpose of Survey Superintendent role is to oversee the preparation and maintenance of all mine surveying plans, managing the survey control data base for operations, and working closely with the technical team to deliver safe production.
 
Key responsibilities
 

  • Lead the underground Survey team to ensure delivery of all relevant survey tasks.
  • Supervising, mentoring, and progressing the development of the underground mine survey team.
  • Define and lead the day-to-day activities of the underground mine survey team to ensure departmental goals are achieved.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders to co-ordinate and implement daily, weekly and longer-term project work.
  • Ensure the daily and End of Month survey reporting is produced to a high standard.
  • Periodic estimation of stope and development overbreak and report on variance for attention.
  • Ensure periodic check surveys are conducted to manage Survey error risks.
  • Developing new and reviewing current procedures and safe work practices within the underground mine survey team to ensure these match current risk management practices.
  • Upholding health, safety, statutory, regulatory, and licensing standards as defined by local statutory and corporate requirements.
  • Evaluate and recommend new software and equipment purchase; stay current on new technological innovations and software applications.
  • Oversee the operational and capital expenditure in the department, ensuring that the capital management framework policies are complied with.
  • Oversee the compliance with internal and external audits.

 
Qualifications and experience
 

  • Qualifications in Surveying or a related discipline, along with significant experience in Underground Mining as a surveyor
  • At least 10 years’ post-qualification experience in underground Mine Surveying with 5 years in a leadership role
  • Experience in the use of Underground Drones and Scanners
  • Experience in the use of relevant software such as Deswik, Surpac, and AutoCAD
  • Ability to develop preventive actions as opposed to corrective actions.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills
  • Pro-active and able to anticipate and manage business needs.
  • Demonstrate leadership, professionalism, integrity, resilience and commitment to pursue organizational goals in a changing environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English. French language skills will be considered an advantage.
  • Willingness to work on rotation, in remote locations.
