The Company
ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership.  The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated. 
 
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
 
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024.  The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The Rail Infrastructure Engineer is going to be responsible for providing expert technical support across all areas of railway infrastructure and superstructure, including the maintenance of tracks, bridges, viaducts, cut and fill slopes, drainage systems, sleepers, fasteners, turnouts, and other essential components.
 
This role supports the planning and execution of maintenance and improvement projects, capacity expansion studies, and contract management for railway infrastructure and superstructure services.
 
Additionally, the Rail Infrastructure Engineer will be responsible for preparing project specifications, evaluating supplier proposals, and ensuring that all infrastructure work meets high standards of safety, quality, and reliability.  The role reports to the CTO Rail.
 
The Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Support and Railway Maintenance Management Support
  • Provide technical expertise for the maintenance and rehabilitation of rail infrastructure components such as bridges, viaducts, slopes, drainage systems, tracks, sleepers, fasteners, and turnouts.
  • Develop and oversee maintenance programs to ensure the structural integrity, safety, and functionality of all railway infrastructure and superstructure components.
  • Conduct regular inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify maintenance needs and develop corrective action plans.
  • Project Development and Rail Capacity Improvement
  • Lead and contribute to the design, planning, and execution of projects aimed at increasing railway capacity and improving the railway infrastructure resilience.
  • Support feasibility studies, technical assessments, and design modifications to optimize rail infrastructure performance.
  • Develop detailed specifications for railway infrastructure improvement projects, focusing on long-term durability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Contract Management and Supplier Evaluation
  • Provide technical support in managing contracts related to railway infrastructure and superstructure services.
  • Prepare specifications for procurement contracts related to railway equipment, materials, and services.
  • Review and evaluate supplier proposals for quality, compliance, and technical suitability, ensuring alignment with project requirements and budget.

 

  • Quality Control and Compliance
  • Ensure that all maintenance and improvement projects comply with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Develop and implement quality control procedures to maintain high standards of safety and performance across all infrastructure work.
  • Conduct regular compliance audits to verify adherence to environmental, health, and safety railway regulations.

 
The Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Railway Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in railway infrastructure are an asset;

 

  • Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in railway engineering, focusing on infrastructure and superstructure maintenance, design, and railway project management;

  • The position offers a 2-year contract with a competitive remuneration package on single status with a 7-3 FIFO roster.
