The Company
Our client operates on a large-scale copper and cobalt deposits, both open pit and underground, with high-grade mineral reserves. Metals production is conducted using up-to-date metallurgical processing. They are one of the world’s largest diversified natural resource companies, producing and marketing over 90 commodities worldwide. The company’s operations include copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals mining.
 
The Role
Under the direct supervision of the General Manager of Health and Safety, the incumbent will have the essential role of leading a team that creates value by promoting health and safety in the mining department by creating forecasts on the changing risk levels and facilitating action before people come to harm and supporting management to implement and improve health and safety processes and practices that meet organizational health objectives and security.
 
The Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the development and execution of company-wide safety, health, hygiene and wellness improvement initiatives in support of the business plan.
  • Facilitate and maintain an evidence-based health and wellbeing risk register.
  • Leverage new technologies and continually improve existing technology for safety, health, hygiene and well-being.
  • Manage the aspects of the injury management and return to work system.
  • Establish and maintain an effective and efficient action management system
  • Lead and improve the safety leadership improvement program.
  • Lead the development and improvement of SMS standards, systems and processes.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with healthcare professionals in support of the health and wellness program.
  • Ensure quality assurance, monitoring and improvement of incident investigations and other learning processes
  • Facilitate systems to improve the quality and rapid execution of actions resulting from audits, incident investigations and other safety improvement processes.
  • Select, build, develop, coach and lead a team of health, wellness, hygiene, safety systems and improvement professionals.
  • Manage expenses according to approved budget
  • Manage contracts in accordance with contract and business requirements
  • Liaise with government, community and industry stakeholders as required in accordance with standards and compliance requirements.

 
The Requirements

  • Hold a university degree in the fields of safety, health, risks, engineering or a related discipline.
  • Have at least 10 years of professional experience in the health and safety field
  • Have at least 5 years dedicated to large projects in the mining or processing industry.
  • Expatriate experience working in Africa would be a strong advantage
  • Demonstrated experience delivering health and wellness improvement programs
  • Fluency in the English language is a considerable advantage
  • Incident Investigation Training – i.e. ICAM, TapRoot , Essential Factors , Blueline
  • A solid but growing knowledge of contemporary security science and professional security practices
  • Risk Facilitation
  • Major Incident Investigation
  • Management of critical risks and critical controls
  • Priority management and adaptation skills.
