ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant
ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The incumbent will be responsible driving and manoeuvring locomotives to facilitate the movement and sorting of rail cars within the yard, ensuring efficient and safe rail operations. A Locomotive Yard Driver plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of rail services and responsible for the efficient operation of a rail yard.
The Key Responsibilities
- Locomotive Yard Drivers will be responsible in ensuring that rail operations run smoothly and have a good understanding of the rail yard layout, safety protocols, and the ability to communicate effectively with other crew members.
- Operate locomotives within the rail yard to move rail cars to and from various locations as required for sorting, assembling, or disassembling trains.
- Handle complex movements of rail cars and managing trains on tracks with varying grades and configurations.
- Work closely with other rail yard personnel, including yard masters and dispatchers, to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
- Conduct Pre-Operational Inspections: Before operating a locomotive, check all safety equipment, brakes, signals, and other critical systems.
- Inspections perform routine inspections of locomotives and rail cars to identify and report any defects or maintenance needs.
- Follow emergency procedures in the event of accidents, equipment failures, or other incidents.
- Conduct basic maintenance tasks on locomotives, such as refuelling, checking fluid levels, and ensuring the proper functioning of safety equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of locomotive usage, movements, and any maintenance or repair work performed.
The Requirements
- Diploma or Equivalent: Basic educational requirement for understanding operational procedures and safety protocols.
- Minimum 2 years Plus in rail operations, including familiarity with yard operations and locomotive handling.
- Vocational Training: Completion of vocational or technical training programs related to rail operations or locomotive mechanics is highly desirable
- Locomotive Operator Certificate.
- Safety Certificate.
