The Company
Our client operates on a large-scale copper and cobalt deposits, both open pit and underground, with high-grade mineral reserves. Metals production is conducted using up-to-date metallurgical processing. They are one of the world’s largest diversified natural resource companies, producing and marketing over 90 commodities worldwide. The company’s operations include copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals mining.
 
The Role
The role will report to the General Manager Technical Services. The incumbent will lead a team whose workload includes geotechnical design and operational control for the open pit and underground mine, as well as design and control of ground and surface water management.
 
The Geotechnical Department plays an essential role in the control of soils and strata within the business, as well as in the management of ground and surface water. The department plays a key role in ensuring that operations are conducted in a safe and sustainable manner.
 
The Responsibilities

  • His/her responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Lead and supervise the geotechnical department and ensure good integration with other technical and operational areas.
  • Review and monitor team compliance with company procedures and policies.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to geotechnical and hydrogeological teams.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment, encouraging knowledge sharing and professional development.
  • Conduct performance reviews and implement training programs to enhance team skills.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate geotechnical and hydrogeological considerations into project design.
  • Work closely with operations to ensure full compliance with geotechnical and hydrogeological instructions and recommendations.
  • Direct and supervise geotechnical and hydrogeological assessments, including the planning, coordination, and execution of field surveys.
  • Supervise the data collection team, assisting in the analysis and interpretation of information to feed into the geotechnical and hydrogeological models.
  • Supervise the planning and execution of geotechnical and hydrogeological drilling campaigns.
  • Supervise the monitoring team, ensuring that all equipment is kept up to date and that real-time recommendations and instructions are provided to operations.
  • Oversee the department’s operational and capital expenditure, ensuring that capital management framework policies are adhered to.
  • Develop and update existing geotechnical and hydrogeological standards to bring them into line with current practices.
  • Oversee the study and implementation of geotechnical and hydrogeological technology throughout the company.
  • Oversee compliance with internal and external audits.
  • He/she will also be responsible for data collection and instrument control.
  • He/she will also ensure good collaboration between technical and operational teams, checking that planning and operations comply with geotechnical and hydrogeological guidelines.

 
 
The Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Geotechnics, Mining Engineering or Civil Engineering.
  • Post-graduate studies will be considered favorably.
  • At least 15 years’ experience in geotechnical and hydrogeological applications in open pit and underground mines.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a managerial role.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills, experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong analytical thinking skills.
  • Supervisory experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Be proactive and able to anticipate and manage business needs.
  • Demonstrate leadership, professionalism, integrity, resilience, and commitment in pursuing the organization’s objectives in a changing environment.
  • Proven expertise in advanced geotechnical analysis and numerical modeling applied to underground and surface mining.
  • Strong focus on geotechnical and hydrogeological analysis and design applied to surface and underground mining.
  • Be able to contribute to aquifer assessment and characterization, well installation and irrigation system design.
  • Be able to develop preventive rather than corrective actions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of French will be considered an advantage.
