ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership.  The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated. 
 
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
 
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024.  The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
The Belt Specialist in the Concentrator/DCO Maintenance Department is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of conveyor belt systems used in mineral processing and material handling. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of conveyor systems, contributing to the overall productivity of the concentrator operations. Working closely with both maintenance and operations teams, the individual in this role will focus on optimizing performance and minimizing downtime. The position reports to the Maintenance Manager.
 
The Key Responsibilities
Operation and Monitoring:

  • Oversee the daily operation of conveyor belt systems, ensuring they function smoothly and efficiently.
  • Monitor belt performance and troubleshoot any operational issues that arise during processing.

 
Maintenance and Repair:

  • Conduct regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on conveyor systems to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety standards.
  • Identify and replace worn or damaged components, including belts, rollers, pulleys, and drives, scrappers and skirtings

 
Parts and consumables:

  • Identify consumption pattern of belt replacement parts and consumables and work closely with supply chain to ensure timely replacement

 
Installation and Upgrades:

  • Assist in the installation and commissioning of new conveyor systems or upgrades to existing systems.
  • Work with engineering teams to implement design changes that enhance system performance and reliability.

 
Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs performed on conveyor systems.
  • Prepare reports on conveyor performance, operational issues, and maintenance activities for management review.
  • Life of belt- Use data to come up with life span of each belt and come up with ways to continuously improve belt life

 
Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to all health and safety protocols while working on conveyor systems, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel.
  • Participate in safety training sessions and promote a culture of safety among team members.

 
Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with other maintenance and operations personnel to coordinate activities related to conveyor systems.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and management regarding maintenance needs and operational issues.

 
Training and Mentoring:

  • Provide training and guidance to junior maintenance staff and operators on conveyor system operation and maintenance practices.
  • Share knowledge and expertise to enhance team skills and performance.

 
The Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification in Mechanical Engineering, Maintenance, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in conveyor system maintenance, preferably in a mining or mineral processing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of conveyor belt systems, components, and maintenance practices.

  • Proficient in using diagnostic tools and equipment, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and scan tools.

 
Problem-Solving Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills to diagnose and resolve electrical issues effectively.
  • Ability to think critically and apply technical knowledge to real-world problems.

 
Attention to Detail:

  • Meticulous in performing diagnostics and repairs, ensuring high-quality workmanship.
  • Committed to maintaining accurate records and documentation.

 
Communication Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Experience in preparing reports and documentation for management.

 
Interpersonal Skills:

  • Strong ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and build effective working relationships.
  • Willingness to mentor and share knowledge with junior staff.
