Peru’s New Mining Wave: An Interview with Mr. Ricardo Porto. CEO of Nexa Resources S.A, Peru.

EXPOMINA PERU 2018 was held in Lima from September 12 to 14 at the Centro de Exposiciones Jockey. During the three days, the 6th edition of EXPOMINA PERU 2018 brought together local and international mining companies and global suppliers with an attendance of 110,000 people.

The Globe 24-7 LATAM team, consisting of Business Development Manager (LATAM), Nathalia Starck, Branch Manager (Colombia), Juan David Viñas and Recruitment Consultant, Claudia Dominguez, had the opportunity to meet and interview Nexa Resources S.A’s Chief Executive Officer (Peru) & Supply Chain and Commercial Director (Brazil), Mr. Ricardo Porto.

Nexa Resources is a publicly traded company with shares traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange in Canada, and New York. The group has more than 60 years of experience and maintains mining and metallurgy operations in Brazil and Peru with emphasis on zinc and copper production.

In a far-reaching interview with Globe 24-7, Porto forecasted the challenges faced by the mining industry in both Peru and Nexa Resources for the next 3 years stating “I believe the main challenges are Manpower. It is always a challenge to build large projects where you have all the workforce needed. In my understanding, the process of attracting, developing and retaining the workforce will be a critical point for any company.

Another key factor is the responsibility in this industry. These new upcoming projects must position themselves to a new level. Regardless of the increase of the world’s circular economy, certainly the demand for minerals in the next few years will continue to grow. Consequently, we need to develop more mining projects. There is still a relative opposition to new mining projects due to a history of social and environmental difficulties. Therefore, more than ever before, each new project should be an example bringing advanced technology to the mining process, energy efficiency and qualified labor.”

For companies to successfully develop more mining projects, Porto emphasized the importance to adopt a “new mining” mindset with “the natural competition for qualified resources” and “a more effective licensing process” adding “we have an incredible portfolio! Currently Nexa have relevant projects in greenfield at a time when Peru is experiencing a new wave of mining, we see it with good eyes, our plan is growth.”
