Approaching 2020 – Contemporary HR for the Global Mining Industry

The 2018 Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto saw over 1,000 exhibitors and 24,000 attendees from 130 countries gather together at the largest annual mining industry conference in the world.

During the conference, Globe 24-7’s CEO, Lachlan Spicer was invited by international media outlet ‘MiningIR’ to participate in an extended interview to provide his insights into the role of human resources within the current and future global mining industry.

The broad-reaching interview hosted by Tia Borden highlighted several key areas that Spicer believes are critical to building an effective HR function in a mining organisation including:

  • The importance of proactive HR at both corporate and site
  • The necessity of robust HR management strategies & plans
  • The requirement for HR professionals to develop commercial acumen.

The interview also explored various HR challenges with Spicer commenting that “The global nature of our industry and its workplace demographics are experiencing rapid change. We can’t ignore the fact that we need to look at HR with a 2020 mindset and that is very different to how we did 5 or 10 years ago. Attracting, developing and retaining staff in a global context today demands companies to have sound leadership, great communication, creativity & innovation and proactive work opportunities”.
