ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.
The Role
The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the operations and maintenance activities within the concentrator workshop. A Workshop Specialist will work closely with maintenance teams and operations staff to ensure optimal equipment performance, adherence to safety standards, and efficient workshop operations. This is a critical role for maintaining smooth operations within a mining or processing plant.
The Key Responsibilities
- The incumbent will be responsible in managing and supervising day-to-day activities within the concentrator workshop and ensure the workshop operates efficiently and in line with production goals.
- Oversee the preventive and corrective maintenance of concentrator equipment and ensure all equipment is running at optimal levels and identify areas for improvement.
- Troubleshoot issues with equipment, perform repairs, and coordinate with specialists for complex issues.
- Collaborate with the operations team to ensure the workshop’s work supports daily production targets.
- Stay updated with industry safety standards and ensure all work complies with regulations and conduct regular safety audits and inspections of equipment and processes.
- Manage inventory levels and track the usage of parts to minimize delays in maintenance activities.
- Recommend improvements in equipment and maintenance procedures to increase efficiency and performance.
- Train workshop staff on new technologies, safety protocols, and best maintenance practices and ensure that all team members have the necessary skills and certifications to perform their duties.
The Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related field. Relevant vocational training or certifications in maintenance or workshop management
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in equipment maintenance and workshop management, with a focus on concentrator or industrial equipment.
- Technical expertise in the maintenance and operation of concentrator equipment.
- Leadership abilities to manage workshop activities and a team of specialists or technicians.
- Safety knowledge to ensure compliance with workplace safety standards.
- Experience working in remote areas of Africa.
