Globe 24-7 in partnership with a key mining client in South Africa are working together to source experienced and qualified talent to join their team.
The Role
The incumbent will support the oversight of the group tax function and its subsidiaries. This role is both strategic and operational in nature, with responsibility for tax reporting and compliance, ensuring that tax risks are identified and appropriately managed. The incumbent will ensure full compliance with all South African tax legislation and oversee annual mandatory reporting to the relevant authorities.
The Responsibilities
Tax Reporting and Compliance:
- Assist in the preparation and submission of accurate and timely tax returns, including income tax, VAT, payroll taxes, and other applicable taxes.
- Conduct monthly VAT and tax reconciliations.
- Ensure the timely and accurate submission of VAT returns and tax calculations across the group and its subsidiaries.
- Calculate provisional tax payments in respect of attributed income.
Tax Planning and Consultation:
- Identify potential tax savings opportunities and efficiency improvements.
- Participate in departmental tax budget planning processes.
- Provide guidance to departments on corporate and payroll tax matters across relevant jurisdictions.
- Provide technical tax input on new investments, ad hoc transactions, and ad hoc tax queries.
Tax Risk Management:
- Identify and assess tax risks associated with business operations and transactions.
- Resolve any third-party appointment issues with SARS.
- Conduct reviews and audits of tax processes, internal controls, and calculations to identify areas of potential non-compliance and incorrect tax treatment.
- Recommend remediation actions to address identified tax risks and issues
- Increase tax focus by communicating with internal departments.
- Collaborate with finance and other departments to ensure accurate tax reporting and compliance.
- Provide support and guidance on tax-related matters to various internal stakeholders.
- Assist in preparing financial statements for external reporting, ensuring compliance with accounting and tax standards.
- Work closely with external auditors to facilitate the annual audit process and address any tax-related inquiries.
The Requirements
- BCom Degree in Accounting with specialisation in Tax, or a BCom Degree with a Higher Diploma in Tax.
- Honours (advantageous).
- 3+ years of experience in a tax-related role, ideally within mining
- Knowledge of tax laws and tax accounting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in accounting software and MS Office, particularly Excel.
