The Company
Our client operates on a large-scale copper and cobalt deposits, both open pit and underground, with high-grade mineral reserves. Metals production is conducted using up-to-date metallurgical processing. They are one of the world’s largest diversified natural resource companies, producing and marketing over 90 commodities worldwide. The company’s operations include copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals mining.
 
The Role
Reporting to the Manager – Underground Fixed Plant Maintenance, the Superintendent – Underground Construction Projects is accountable for the safe, efficient and cost-effective execution of construction and minor engineering projects in support of the underground mine.
 
The Superintendent leads a team of personnel focused on executing underground construction and engineering projects to a high standard, ensuring adherence to all safety regulations and maximizing production uptime. The role provides leadership and operational direction to the Construction Projects team, ensuring resources, capacity and capability are aligned to the work plans. 
 
The Responsibilities

  • Responsible for performance reporting and documentation; identifies, reports on and recommends corrections of variance to plan / process; drives and monitors continuous improvement focused on safety, operability, reliability, value and cost reduction.
  • Specific accountabilities include the on-time to budget and specification installation of:
    • Life support systems.
    • Backfill reticulation and walls.
    • Underground sumps, settlers, pump systems, pipe runs and bulk heads.
    • Vent systems including shafts, raises and walls.
  • The key outcomes for the Superintendent – Construction Projects as per the Underground 1-year plan and budget are to be delivered through inspired leadership focused on duty of care, maintenance excellence, operational discipline, value creation, employee development, teamwork and continuous improvement including
  • Zero harm to personnel, contractors, the environment and host communities
  • Proactively managing High-Risk Tasks, Fatal Hazards, Critical Controls, workplace hazards and risks as per company expectations.
  • Maintaining a high standard of workplace housekeeping and a culture of contamination free, safe and healthy facilities, workplaces and equipment.
  • Role modelling and delivering through coaching and mentoring, sustainable improvement in supervisory and workplace practices to enable current and future business needs.
  • Defining and delivering tactics to maximise asset potential and deliver on the plans; aligning resources, people, succession plans and development.
  • Driving operational discipline in alignment with business plans, priorities and expectations through clearly defining what is expected, ensuring understanding of expectations, verifying that expectations are delivered on and leading by example.
  • Identifying the need for change to deliver on operational objectives; supports, drives and monitors change initiatives.
  • Assuring that minor underground projects are scoped, scheduled, costed and executed as per the company Capital Projects framework.
  • Delivering projects, engineered installations and constructions in alignment to the required operational standards and commitments.
  • Enabling production through the on-time and on-budget provision of backfill, dewatering and ventilation infrastructure.
  • Delivering compliance with project schedule and work quality expectation through safe and efficient work execution.
  • Delivers knowledge and skills transfer through focus on developing the competencies of subordinates.

 
The Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in underground mining operations, with a proven track record in construction projects
  • Strong understanding of mechanical installation and concrete work.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant safety regulations and legislation governing underground mining.
  • Possess a deep understanding of underground construction projects including raises, wall, sumps and reticulation. Ability to plan, schedule, and prioritize tasks effectively to optimize productivity. Strong critical, analytical and creative thinking skill
  • Ability to translate technical ideas into practical solutions robust understanding of best practice in safe Maintenance Execution, Planning & Reliability
  • French or Swahili language skills are advantageous
