The Company
Our client operates on a large-scale copper and cobalt deposits, both open pit and underground, with high-grade mineral reserves. Metals production is conducted using up-to-date metallurgical processing. They are one of the world’s largest diversified natural resource companies, producing and marketing over 90 commodities worldwide. The company’s operations include copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals mining.

The Role
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Social Engineer to join our team in the copper mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The ideal candidate will be responsible for implementing and managing social initiatives, community engagement programs, and stakeholder relations to ensure positive relationships with local communities and stakeholders. As a Social Engineer, you will play a critical role in fostering sustainable development, promoting social responsibility, and mitigating social risks associated with mining operations in the DRC.

The Responsibilities

  • Community Engagement: Develop and implement strategies for effective communication and engagement with local communities residing near mining operations. This includes organizing community meetings, facilitating dialogue sessions, and addressing community concerns in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Stakeholder Relations: Build and maintain positive relationships with various stakeholders including government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community leaders, and local authorities. Collaborate with stakeholders to identify shared objectives and develop mutually beneficial partnerships.
  • Social Impact Assessment: Conduct social impact assessments to understand the potential social implications of mining activities on local communities. Assess social risks and develop mitigation measures to minimize adverse impacts and enhance positive outcomes.
  • Social Performance Monitoring: Establish monitoring mechanisms to track the social performance of mining operations. Regularly evaluate social indicators, gather feedback from stakeholders, and implement corrective actions as necessary to improve social outcomes.
  • Community Development Projects: Identify and prioritize community development projects aimed at enhancing the well-being and livelihoods of local communities. Coordinate the implementation of projects related to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic empowerment in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Ensure compliance with applicable social regulations, standards, and company policies. Prepare periodic reports on social performance, community engagement activities, and progress towards social development goals for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Capacity Building: Provide training and capacity-building support to company staff, contractors, and community members on social responsibility principles, community engagement techniques, and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Conflict Resolution: Facilitate the resolution of conflicts and disputes arising between the company and local communities or among community members. Mediate negotiations and foster dialogue to reach mutually acceptable solutions.

The Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Community Development, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proven experience (5+ years) working in social or community development roles, preferably in the mining sector or similar extractive industries.
  • Strong understanding of social issues, cultural dynamics, and socio-economic context in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in multicultural environments and navigate complex stakeholder relationships.
  • Proficiency in French and English languages (written and spoken).
  • Familiarity with social impact assessment methodologies, stakeholder engagement frameworks, and international best practices in corporate social responsibility (CSR).
  • Willingness to travel to mining sites and work in challenging environmental conditions.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with the right to work in the DRC
