ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.
The Role
The incumbent will be responsible for the strategic planning, coordination, and execution of shutdown activities within the ArcelorMittal mine in Liberia. This role involves developing detailed shutdown plans, managing resources, and ensuring that all maintenance and repair activities are completed efficiently, safely, and within budget. Shutdown Planning Engineer plays a crucial role in coordinating and managing maintenance shutdowns to ensure operations run smoothly.
The Key Responsibilities
· The incumbent will develop and maintain detailed shutdown schedules for all maintenance and repair activities.
· Coordinate with cross-functional teams (maintenance, operations, procurement, etc.) to ensure all tasks are aligned and feasible within the shutdown window.
· Manage the allocation of resources (personnel, equipment, materials) to ensure timely execution of shutdown activities.
· Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulatory requirements to protect workers and equipment.
· Monitor and control the shutdown budget, ensuring that activities are carried out within financial constraints.
· Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other key stakeholders to keep everyone informed of progress and potential issues.
· Maintain thorough documentation of the shutdown plan, progress, and any issues that arise and provide regular progress reports to senior management.
· Review the effectiveness of the shutdown process and identify areas for improvement and conduct post-shutdown evaluations and incorporate lessons learned.
The Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related field.
· Minimum 5 years of experience in managing and executing major shutdown or projects in an operating environment preferably in mining/material or industrial sector.
· Strong skills in planning, organizing, and overseeing large-scale projects.
· In-depth knowledge of mining equipment, maintenance processes, and repair techniques.
· Familiarity with safety regulations and risk management practices.
· Experience in managing budgets and resources effectively.
· Experience working in remote areas of Africa.
