ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership.  The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal’s mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated. 
 
ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.
 
ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024.  The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role
 
The Power and Distribution Planning Specialist for Energy Department is responsible for developing, implementing, and optimizing operations and maintenance plans for power and distribution facilities and equipment. This role involves coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure that power and distribution operations and maintenance activities are efficiently operated, maintenance planned, scheduled and executed to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency. The Power and Distribution Planning Specialist will focus on operations and maintenance (preventive and predictive) strategies, resource management, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
 
The Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Planning:
Develop Operating and Maintenance Plans:

  • Create and maintain detailed operating and maintenance plans for port equipment, including power systems, powerplants and its auxiliary systems (cooling and fuel), substations, distribution systems, satellite generators and tower lights.
  • Forecast load consumption and manage operational and maintenance plans and scheduling to avail electrical systems to always meet power requirements.

 
Schedule Operating and Maintenance Activities:

  • Develop and manage operations and maintenance schedules to ensure minimal disruption to mining, rail and port operations, balancing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance tasks.
  • Be proactive with Planning requirements, structures, schedule, cost, quality, and environmental criteria for all operations and maintenance strategies. Lower safety and Business Risk during planned operations and maintenance activities
  • Make effective use of shutdown time frame to perform condition monitoring and other maintenance activities, including detailed.
  • Provide timely reports that accurately communicates agreed KPI’s relating to performance and reliability.
  • Develop and document guidelines and practices for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance techniques and programs to be applied at sites.
  • Recommend and implement new systems and technology which enhances operational and maintenance performance and equipment reliability.
  • Complete site assessments focused on operating condition monitoring, predictive maintenance and maintenance strategies.
  • Review operational routines and predictive maintenance programs and ensure appropriate actions are being implemented by analysis of results.
  • Provide technical support to operations and maintenance personnel in the areas of planning, condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, maintenance strategy development, failure analysis and reliability engineering.

 
Optimize Work Orders: Review and prioritize work orders based on urgency, equipment condition, and operational impact.
 
Resource Management:

  • Resource Allocation: Plan and allocate resources, including personnel, tools, and materials, to ensure timely and efficient completion of maintenance activities.
  • Vendor Coordination: Coordinate with external vendors and contractors for specialized maintenance tasks and procurement of parts or services.

 
Data Management and Analysis:

  • Maintenance Records: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment performance, and parts usage.
  • Performance Metrics: Analyze maintenance data to track performance metrics, identify trends, and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Proficient user of SAP.

 
Continuous Improvement:

  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements to enhance operations and maintenance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Best Practices: Stay updated on industry best practices and emerging technologies to incorporate into operations and maintenance planning and execution.
  • Continuous improvement by rigorous shutdown postmortem analysis

 
Communication and Coordination:

  • Stakeholder Coordination: Work closely with maintenance teams, operations staff, and management to ensure clear communication and coordination of operations and maintenance activities.
  • Identify areas of potential improvement and introduce process, procedures, equipment, structures, and resources to address the issues. and efficiency. This includes availability, MTTR, MTBF, MTBS, PCR execution duration vs plan etc., planned efficiency)
  • Reporting: Prepare and present regular reports on operations and maintenance performance, including key performance indicators (KPIs), work order status, and resource utilization.

 
Training and Support:

  • Training Programs: Develop and deliver training programs for operations and maintenance staff on best practices, new procedures, and equipment handling.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical support and guidance to operations and maintenance teams to resolve complex issues and improve operations and maintenance practices.

 
The Requirements
 

  • A diploma or degree in Electrical/ Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certification as a professional trainer.
  • SAP planning super user.
  • 15 + years’ experience in the mining industry.

  • The position offers a 2-year contract with a competitive remuneration package on single status with a 7-3 FIFO roster.
