Chief Operating Officer – Mining

Website Globe 24-7

We are partnering with an ambitious and growth-focused mining company to appoint a Chief Operations Officer (COO) who will play a central role in leading operational performance and setting the strategic direction for the future.

Our client is a dynamic, small-to-mid-tier mining business with one established, producing operation and a second project on track to enter production within the next few years. They foster a collaborative, non-hierarchical culture and are seeking a COO who thrives in hands-on environments and values teamwork, agility, and operational excellence.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Board, the COO will oversee the company’s operational mine site while leading the development and execution strategy for the upcoming project. This role offers a clear succession pathway to the Managing Director position within 2–3 years, making it an ideal opportunity for a technically skilled, strategically minded leader ready to step into a top executive role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day operations at the company’s active mine site, ensuring optimal safety, efficiency, and productivity
  • Oversee the transition of a development project into a fully operational mine
  • Drive continuous improvement across operations, performance, and cost efficiency
  • Collaborate closely with technical, financial, and corporate teams in a flat-structured, hands-on environment
  • Build and lead strong site-based and corporate teams that reflect the company’s values and culture
  • Contribute to and drive long-term strategic planning and organisational growth initiatives

Candidate Profile

  • Degree-qualified in Mining Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Proven operational leadership experience in the mining sector, with ideally exposure to both large-scale and smaller agile operations
  • Demonstrated success in both mine site management and project development
  • A collaborative, down-to-earth leadership style with a strong practical orientation
  • Ambition and capability to progress into a Managing Director role in the medium term
  • Ability to travel to site regularly
  • Ideally based on the east coast of Australia

Why This Role?

  • Opportunity to shape the operational direction of a fast-growing mining business
  • Strong internal support and a clear MD succession pathway
  • A highly collaborative, values-driven culture without corporate bureaucracy
  • Make a significant impact across both operational and strategic dimensions
